One tongue— | one thought. |
Many tongues— | one thought. |
2,000 years after creation, Adam, having brought a full harvest of rebellion, and man’s mind having gone far from God, gave birth to some new thoughts.
Everyone on the earth spoke the same language, everything seemed to be fine. But some had ideas—Go on, let’s make some bricks and build a tower up to heaven. Wonderful! Let’s make a name for ourselves, just in case we might be scattered all over the place! Sounds good? Very. Gen. 11:1–4
Now let’s turn and listen to what is being talked about in heaven while all this was going on. The LORD is saying they all have one language and look what they are planning. So THEY said, Let US, (the Trinity—Father, Son and Holy Spirit,) go down ... we will make them speak different languages, so that they won’t understand each other and they will be scattered all over the face of the earth. Gen. 11:5–9
One language had led only to having evil thoughts. So the curse was pronounced, the multitude of languages followed and the scattering resulted. The spirit of rebellion spread everywhere.
Now a long period of time followed, God bringing successive times of testing—the law, priests, kings and prophets, each ending with failure.
Again we hear a conversation of the three Persons of the God-head in heaven, “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, Who will go for US? Then said I (the Lord Jesus, Son of God), Here am I; send me.” Isa. 6:8 Jesus Christ, another Person of the God-head, was willing and obedient to go down to become a man and be the perfect Sacrifice, bearing the penalty of all sin and rebellion. He brought redemption.
The Lord Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit, brought all believers into one body, and, greater still, made it possible for all to be of one mind. Not one language, but better, to be of one mouth. “That ye may, with one mind and one mouth, glorify God ... .” Rom.15:6 All believers in Christ have been given this ability.
In Acts 2:1, many different languages were present, but all the believers were all with one accord in one place. The Holy Spirit had come down and baptized them all into one body. Verse 4 tells that the Galilaeans (the Jews) were able to speak in many languages. Verses 8 to 17 list the many nationalities which could clearly understand what was being said by the apostles. The Spirit of God did this and they all gave glory to God.
Did they keep on? Acts 2:42 says, “They continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread ... .”
When the Spirit gathers persons of different languages to the Lord’s Table today, can He not fully engage the heart with joy and peace? Does the Lord change? Is it not that we turn our eye from Christ and allow thoughts to engage our mind?
Language barriers certainly exist in humanly arranged groups, (Parliament, etc.) but never in Scripture do we read of difficulties among those gathered to the Lord’s Name in the book of the Acts. In 1 Corinthians 14:27, 28 we have specific instruction on this subject.
Christ is the Object before us at the Lord’s Table, Who attracts and maintains us there.
