Circumstances and customs have certainly changed in the last 2,000 years, but in one area of life, there is no change ... when the Holy Spirit came to earth, He baptized all believers into one body, the unity of the Spirit. Eph. 4:1-3 tells us to endeavor (be diligent) to maintain that unity (not to establish a group around ideas). His work is to draw every believer into that unity. Union isn’t unity.
We don’t choose which group of believers we’ll join. If we were obedient to Him, all believers would be in one unity and Christ would be glorified.
The question is, “Did I decide to be where I am now associated, or was it the Holy Spirit Who gathered me to the Name of the Lord Jesus, where the truth of the ‘one body’ is practiced?
Am I carrying out in my life what Scripture tells me?
We cannot limit what the blessed Spirit can do for us, if only we will get low enough. But we can take the place where He can do it.
Government of groups of believers is not in Scripture. Where this is assumed, there will be confusion, for the Holy Spirit is the only source of power.
The Spirit’s work is to glorify Christ and to gather all believers to His Name. May we let Him. John 16:14
